THE FIRST FIVE STEPS YOU SHOULD TAKE IN A CYBER ATTACK

Technology is a wonderful thing. It has helped to connect the world and to make things far more convenient than ever before. People love this convenience, but they do not always realize that it brings with it a substantial amount of risk. Cyber-attacks are a serious threat, and it is vital that you understand what you need to do in order to protect your business from these problems.
If you have a relatively small business, then you might feel as though you don’t need to worry about your cyber security. That’s not the case at all. For most, even smaller businesses, it is only a matter of time before they become the victim of a cyber attack. The thing that separates you from a victim though will be the ability to deal with the attack. Let’s look at the first five steps that you need to take in the event this happens.

Step 1: Do Not Panic
This is easier said than done. When your website is undergoing a cyber attack, it can be very frightening. Your mind starts to consider all of the consequences. If your site goes down, how will your customers be able to reach you and make purchases? If they breach your security, they could steal personal information from you, your employees, and your customers. It has the potential to be the end of your business, or at the very least, a major setback.
If you are too nervous and fearful when this happens, you may find that it is impossible to react as quickly as you should when things go wrong. By keeping a clear head, you will be able to handle the attack and spring into action much more quickly
Step 2: Initiate Your Plan of Action
In this day and age, you should have a plan of action in the event of a cyber attack. If you haven’t thought about what you need to do during an attack, it’s time to take a step back and rethink things. You have to have a plan for various types of attack. Know what you are going to do if someone tries to breach your security or if someone is trying to DDOS your site. Ideally, your business has a team in place that has created a business continuity plan, and it includes information on how to deal with cyber attacks. Now is the time to initiate the plan. You want to act as quickly as possible so you can mitigate the damage.
Step 3: Keep the Servers On
Many businesses believe that turning off the servers will solve their problem. That’s not the case though. You still need to keep the servers connected, and you will see why in a later step.
Step 4: Switch to the Backup Servers
However, your disaster recovery plan should include backup servers that you can switch to. This way, the company will be working off of those servers that have not been compromised.
Step 5: Make Sure Everything Is Preserved
The reason you do not want to turn off the servers is so you can later analyze the evidence. It will let you know what happened, as well as where and how the breach took place. This information will let you discover the areas where your site was vulnerable so you can shore them up in the future.
